Information

The
Clarinda Lied Center began as an expansion of the Clarinda Parks and Recreation Department
in April of 1994 with the addition of a 22,000 square foot building attached to our
existing indoor swimming pool. The Clarinda Foundation wanted to do something special for the people of Clarinda. They approached the City Council and the Clarinda Park Board with the idea of a community center. It would be attached to and made an integral part of the present swimming pool. It would be a facility for the community that all ages could enjoy for several generations.
The Council and Park Board gave their approval. The Foundation went to work, and with the support of the community, raised the necessary funds to build the Lied Center.
Christina Hixson, a former resident of Clarinda, provided the major contribution. She made available a grant in the amount of $832,000 from the Lied Foundation. This was matched with donations received from the people of Clarinda, surrounding areas and across the country. They even received a $150,000 donation from Johnny Carson.
The Lied Center has a walking/jogging track, basketball courts, volleyball
courts, a racquetball court, weight and exercise rooms, kitchen facilities, a
meeting room and activities planned for all ages.
Some of these activities include: leagues for youth volleyball, adult women's volleyball, basketball, walleyball, racquetball, aerobic classes, cribbage
tournaments, tumbling classes, rooms for family dinners, meeting rooms, a 250
mile walking club, a place for seminars, senior citizen meals, etc.
The Clarinda indoor swimming pool was opened in 1977. It has always been an
important asset to Clarinda and the surrounding area. Being an integral part of
the Lied Center, it has grown in importance and function. It is a 25-meter pool
with six swimming lanes, a ten-foot diving area, 3-flume slide, and a spacious
whirlpool heated to a toasty 104 degrees. Some of the activities offered at the
pool include: water exercise classes, Red Cross swimming lessons for 500 - 600
participants yearly, private swim lessons, swim team, early bird and adult lap
swimming, water volleyball, private rentals for various groups, a 50 mile
swimming club, etc.
THE MULTI-PURPOSE AREA
The Clarinda Lied Center Gymnasium is a 10,500 square area that consists of a rubberized walking/jogging track that surrounds a wood parquet gym floor.
The gym area has a curtain that can be pulled down to provide two courts at one time or left open to provide one larger court. There are two electronic scoreboards available to use for organized play; either separately for two-court play or simultaneously for use on the main court.
There are six basketball backboards and rims surrounding the gym area.
Volleyball standards are available for two volleyball courts.
THE COMMONS AREA
The Commons Area provides a "hub" connecting the multi-purpose area to the indoor swimming pool. The main entrance to the Lied Center enters this area from the south. The commons area contains the reception desk and a large room for the congregate meal site to use for their noon meals. This Kitchen Room is also available for private rental.
Off this hub branches an exercise room, for ages 14 and over, containing weight lifting machines, exercise bikes, a stairmaster, treadmills, elliptical machines, etc.
Across from the Exercise Room, there is another large room, which is used for aerobic classes.
A hallway leads from the lobby area down to our Racquetball/Walleyball court.
The lobby is a large area where people can sit and relax, read, watch T.V., visit, view the pool activities, have a snack, etc.
There are locker rooms located between the lobby and the pool. These rooms house restrooms, showers, dressing areas and lockers for use or rental.
